New US President Joe Biden has filled his diplomatic team with members from the era of President Barack Obama, with a strong desire to "repair" the reputation of American foreign policy damaged by Donald Trump's actions.
Former Obama administration member Antony Blinken will be Secretary of State.
Deputy Secretary of State will be Wendy Sherman (71), a diplomatic advisor during Bill Clinton's term before becoming Under Secretary for Political Affairs in Barack Obama's second term. Sherman played an important role in the creation of the nuclear deal with Iran and worked on the North Korean issue in Bill Clinton's administration.
Joe Biden has announced on several occasions that he intends to return the United States to the Iranian nuclear deal, from which Republican Donald Trump withdrew in 2018, and reimposed sanctions on Iran that were lifted in 2015. However, Biden expects Tehran to return to full compliance with the nuclear deal, from which it has gradually abandoned some provisions.
On Saturday, Biden nominated McKeon as Assistant Secretary of State for Management and Resources, his advisor when he was a senator. McKeon also held various positions during Barack Obama's two terms.
The new faces of American diplomacy "embody my deep conviction that America is strongest when it works with its allies," Biden explained.
The future president wants to restore the United States to its "moral and leading place in the world." "America is back, ready to lead the world, not withdraw from it," said Biden's team.
By withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear program agreement and the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump distanced himself during his term from the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the European Union and its most influential members.
Joe Biden represents a return to professional diplomacy. On Saturday, he officially selected three undersecretaries, three women who all worked in Barack Obama's administration. Their appointments will be decided by the Senate.
"Americans can be assured that these patriots will promote the country's interests and uphold its noblest ideals on the international stage," tweeted former Secretary of State during Bill Clinton's term, Madeleine Albright.
Responding to criticism from those who accuse him of surrounding himself only with former Obama officials, Biden emphasized that the State Department will be "more open to diversity than ever before."
As Under Secretary for Political Affairs, the third-highest diplomatic position in the US, Biden appointed Victoria Nuland, who was the top US diplomat for Europe, ambassador to NATO, and spokesperson for the State Department, Reuters writes.
As Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, he appointed Uzra Zeya, who was Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor during Barack Obama's term and visited Croatia in that capacity.
