(Patria) - President Joe Biden on Sunday pledged that the United States would not abandon Ukraine despite aid being left out of a deal to avoid a "government shutdown", calling on Republicans to "stop the games" over funding, Reuters reported.
"I want to assure our American allies, the American people, and the people of Ukraine that you can count on our support. We will not walk away," Biden said in remarks from the White House.
Biden said there was a "prevailing sense of urgency" to get Congress to pass a new aid package for Ukraine in the coming days and weeks as it fights off Russia's invasion.
An 11th-hour deal by Congress on Saturday night to avoid a U.S. government "shutdown" does not include new war aid for Ukraine as part of a compromise between Republicans and Democrats.
Democrat Biden lashed out at Republicans and urged House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to avoid another shutdown drama once the 45-day stopgap deal agreed on Saturday expires.
"I am done with the brinkmanship," Biden said.
"The brinkmanship has to stop. There should be no new crisis," he added.
