(Patria) - US President Joe Biden stated that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza could deter Iran from attacking Israel in retaliation for the killing of a Hamas leader, which has caused a rise in regional tensions, agencies reported.
His remarks followed Iran's rejection of Western calls to "back down" from the threat of retaliation.
Iran and its allies blamed Israel for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh on July 31 during a visit to Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Israel has not commented on the accusations.
Iran has vowed revenge for his death, which followed hours after Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut.
When asked if a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could prevent an Iranian attack, Biden said:
"That's my expectation."
He told reporters in New Orleans that while negotiations have "become difficult," he is "not giving up".
Citing three senior Iranian officials, Reuters reported earlier on Tuesday that only a ceasefire agreement resulting from possible negotiations this week would prevent Iran from direct retaliation against Israel.
