Biden: Israel is losing global support

(Patria) - US President Joe Biden said Israel is beginning to lose global support due to its "indiscriminate bombing" of Gaza, the BBC reported.

His comments, made to donors at a fundraising event for his campaign, marked his sharpest criticism to date of the Israeli leadership. Biden has offered unwavering public support to Israel since Hamas attacked on October 7, while senior US officials have shown increasing dissatisfaction with Israel's response in Gaza. Biden is also facing growing pressure, including from within his own Democratic Party, to curb Israel's military campaign.

"Israel's security can rest on the United States, but right now it has more than the United States. It has the European Union, it has Europe, it has most of the world," Biden said in Washington.

"But they are starting to lose that support with the indiscriminate bombing that is taking place," he said.

He added that "there is no doubt about the need to confront Hamas" and that Israel has "every right" to do so.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said on Tuesday that more than 18,400 people have been killed in Israeli bombing since October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel and killed 1,200 people.
In a statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had received "full support" from the US for its ground war and its goal of destroying Hamas and returning hostages. He added that Washington had blocked "international pressure to stop the war".

"Yes, there is disagreement about the 'day after Hamas' and I hope we will reach (an agreement) here too," he said. Biden alluded to their disagreement in his comments on Tuesday and said Netanyahu must "change" his government, as well as his stance on a two-state solution. This proposal is favored by the international community to end the conflict and would lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank that exists alongside Israel.

"This is the most conservative government in the history of Israel," Biden said.

"This government in Israel is making it very difficult for him. They do not want a two-state solution," he added.
