(Patria) - Republican Governor of Texas Greg Abbott said the state is prepared for the "unlikely event" that President Joseph Biden federalizes the Texas National Guard, i.e., places them under his command, The Hill reported.
„Well, first, I would be shocked. That would be an outrageous move on his part, a complete disaster,” Abbott told conservative host Tucker Carlson on the show "Uncensored."
„First of all, as you can imagine, we are prepared in case that unlikely event occurs to ensure we can continue exactly what we have been doing for the past month, which is building these barriers,” Abbott added.
This week, the Texas National Guard appeared to ignore a Supreme Court ruling authorizing the removal of razor wire barriers and continued construction along the border. Abbott justified his decision while criticizing Biden for failing to enforce immigration law.
The governor cited the constitutional authority the state has to defend itself from invasion, as the wave of migrants arriving at the border continues.
Republican governors from several states have supported Abbott in the conflict with the federal government. Abbott told Carlson that Texas has deployed members of the Department of Public Safety „as well as other law enforcement officers” paired with National Guard members from other states at the border, adding that it would help even more if there were additional forces.
The governor said he has not spoken with Biden about the conflict but has previously given the administration letters „that contained enough urgent solutions” that would not require the passage or signing of „any new law.”
Abbott said he would be „shocked and disappointed” if states that committed to supporting him in his efforts ultimately do not send their National Guard members to Texas.
„They are now with us, and this is a fight for the future of America, and everyone knows it,” he said on Friday. „And that is why I believe they will all be involved in this effort,” he added.
House Speaker Republican Mike Johnson and former President Trump have pledged support for Abbott in the new challenge at the U.S.-Mexico border.
