Biden received 302 electoral votes: Time to turn the page

(Patria) - With the votes of electors from US federal states on Monday, the victory of the elected Democratic President Joe Biden was confirmed, ending Republican Donald Trump's attempts to challenge the election results. November.

Biden received the 270 electoral votes needed to win in the afternoon Eastern American time. The Democratic president was 'pushed' over the 270-vote threshold by electors from California. He received 302 electoral votes.

The electors' votes usually do not attract much attention, but due to the protracted process and the fact that Donald Trump never accepted the election results, the electors' votes from each state were closely watched.

Vermont, a small US federal state in the northeast of the country, was the first on Monday whose electors voted in the formal procedure by which the Electoral College confirms the results of the US presidential election, which was won by former US Vice President Biden.

For Biden, among others, electors from the federal states of Georgia (16), Nevada (6), Arizona (11), Pennsylvania (20), Wisconsin (10), and New York (29) have already voted. It was in that state that former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State and his wife Hillary Clinton cast two electoral votes, as they were among the 29 electors available to New York.

Applause echoed through the hall when it was announced that all 29 electors had voted for Biden and Senator Kamala Harris for Vice President, reports the New York Times.

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat, was also one of the electors and presided over the Electoral College.

After the vote, Hillary Clinton announced on Twitter her belief that "the Electoral College should be abolished and the president should be elected by the winner of the popular vote."

In Pennsylvania, which with its 20 electoral votes also confirmed Joe Biden's victory, Democratic Party leader Nancy Patton Mills stated: "This is a great day for democracy."

Trump said late last month that he would leave the White House if the Electoral College voted for Biden, but has since continued an unprecedented campaign to overturn his defeat. As the electors announced their decisions, Donald Trump tweeted that Bill Barr is no longer the Attorney General, and that Jeff Rosen will take over that duty.

"Faith in our institutions has been maintained. The integrity of our elections has remained intact. Now is the time to turn the page. To unite. To heal wounds," Biden said.

He reiterated his campaign promise to be president of all Americans and that a difficult fight against the pandemic and for economic recovery lies ahead.

The inauguration of the US President will be on January 20.
