Biden to travel to Rome in January to meet Pope Francis

U.S. President Joe Biden will travel to Rome in January to meet with Pope Francis and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the White House announced on Thursday about the trip that will take place shortly before the end of Biden's term, Reuters reported.

Biden will also meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella during the visit from January 9 to 12, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said.

"President Biden will have an audience with the Pope and discuss efforts to promote peace around the world," she said, adding that he will discuss with Meloni "the important challenges facing the world."

Biden spoke with Pope Francis on Thursday.

"The President thanked the Pope for his continued commitment to alleviating global suffering, including his work to advance human rights and protect religious freedoms," a separate White House statement said.

Biden's presidency ends on January 20, when President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated.
