Biden to propose major US Supreme Court reform

(Patria) - US President Joe Biden is preparing to propose a major overhaul of the Supreme Court next week that would include term limits for justices and an enforceable code of ethics, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing two sources familiar with the plans, Reuters reported.

Biden is also weighing whether to call for a constitutional amendment to abolish broad presidential immunity, the Washington Post reports.

During discussions with the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Saturday, Biden said there would be some kind of Supreme Court reform that he would reveal or seek, according to a source familiar with the discussion. He did not provide any details at the time.

Biden has previously shied away from calls for reform of the highest court by imposing term limits or expanding the number of justices. Some Democrats have called for changes after former President Donald Trump appointed three conservative justices. Any such reform would require congressional support.

In October, a bipartisan group of legal experts expressed support for eighteen-year term limits for Supreme Court justices as a way to deter bias and improve the judiciary's reputation.
