The Serbian Security Intelligence Agency (BIA), in cooperation with colleagues from the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs, arrested a high-ranking official of the Criminal Police Directorate (UKP) a few days ago, reports the news agency Patria.
According to unofficial information obtained by Belgrade's Novosti, he is suspected of divulging confidential information from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to CIA officials serving at the US Embassy in Belgrade.
It is also added that the police officer is suspected of regularly reporting to the Americans about activities within the office of Minister Nebojša Stefanović, personnel changes, the state of the service, and police operations in the field.
"He transferred this collected information through direct contact to CIA operatives. Therefore, this is a classic intelligence operation, and the suspect has been under surveillance for a long time," states the Novosti source.
The same source claims that there are grounds for suspicion that some other Serbian citizens are involved in this agent network and that counter-intelligence activities will not end with this case alone. In addition, contacts with other intelligence services, not just the American one, are being checked, and new arrests can be expected soon.
