Dr. Zijad Bećirović, director of the International Institute for Middle Eastern and Balkan Studies (IFIMES) Ljubljana, briefly commented for Patria on Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.
- If we are to infer from his campaign statements, we should expect the newly elected US President Donald Trump to initiate radical changes.
However, it often happens that an election campaign is one thing, and conducting state policy is something completely different. Nevertheless, we will have to wait for Trump to form his cabinet, and only then will it be clear what policy he will pursue.
Both the US and the world need change. The differences lie in what kind of changes the US and the world need and how to implement them. I think the role of Russia and its president Vladimir Putin is still being exaggerated.
Russia is economically on its knees, and if it wants to have influence and power on the world political scene, it cannot achieve it with its current weak economy. Trump's presidency in the US certainly poses a challenge to both the US and the world order.
We must not forget the fact that the US, like Israel, for example, is a democratic country with its own institutions, and the president must act within those frameworks and cannot do whatever he wants or wishes, says Bećirović.
