The President of the Party of Democratic Action, Bakir Izetbegović, woke up from a deep sleep at the turn of winter into spring. He woke up and started telling jokes, defining serious matters with frivolity. And, of course, making promises. Because, if he doesn't promise something, the people will think he is not Izetbegović.
The newly awakened Bakir says, “the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Zoran Tegeltija, is invisible.” The SDA leader forgets that the media turned the label for the coronavirus into the question: COVIDIO Bakir?
“Budgets are fiction,” says Izetbegović in an interview with the Fena Agency. The majority of citizens in the Federation of BiH agree with him. For that majority, the budget is indeed fiction.
The problem with the SDA leader's definition of the budget is the fact that in well-ordered countries, the budget represents a quality elaboration of planned revenues and expenditures, unlike in the FBiH and BiH. The budget is therefore not fiction, but a planning document.
After the joke and the poor definition of the budget, Izetbegović also spoke one great truth.
“Our economy is resilient. The entrepreneurs who have been building up BiH over the last 20 years have, without special assistance and support, under very unfavorable conditions, created companies and made them successful.”
Read this sentence three times. Especially those of you who have voted for the SDA in the last 20 years. It would be right for you to think hard.
The President of the SDA has finally admitted what we all know. The SDA has been “riding” on the story of how the state is being built, how the economy will flourish. Time and time again.
And who was supposed to help the economy?
Of course, the state of BiH! In that state, the SDA has been in power and part of the government for 30 years. Bakir Izetbegović has been at the top of that SDA since 2002. He was a parliamentarian in the Sarajevo Canton, the Parliament of the FBiH, and the Parliament of BiH. He was twice a member of the Presidency of BiH. And today he holds a position in the leadership of the House of Peoples of the Parliament of BiH.
It is as if the sleep during the pandemic caused him some delirium and amnesia. The man forgot that he, his party, and hordes of officials are the ones who failed to help the economy.
How resilient this economy of ours is, is shown by the announcements, some of which are already coming true, about layoffs. Judging by what some entrepreneurs are announcing, the possibility that 100,000 workers could lose their jobs is not excluded.
It is also interesting that Izetbegović throws criticism at his own staff, who, unlike him, work 24 hours a day. In the aforementioned interview, he says “that certain measures are not precise.” Fadil Novalić, the Prime Minister of the FBiH (SDA), is on the move 24 hours a day. He is on the screens every day.
And Bakir Izetbegović? He slept through the course of the crisis so far. While Novalić drafts proposals for measures, convenes experts and parliamentarians, Izetbegović sleeps.
While Aleksandar Vučić seeks and receives help from China and Arab countries, Izetbegović has hidden again. We hope he hasn't ended up in the vault again. True, the media reported that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent some aid after Izetbegović's request, but one should not forget that Milorad Dodik also spoke with the Turkish president about the same thing.
Dodik, whatever he is like, managed to teach Izetbegović a lesson. Regardless of his methods and goals, Dodik, as the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, started the fight against the coronavirus.
Dodik has Minister Alen Šeranić, Izetbegović has Vjekoslav Mandić. Šeranić received positive marks, Mandić is ungraded. So to speak, he was absent from class.
Much has happened since Izetbegović fell asleep and slept through the difficult days for Bosnian-Herzegovinian society.
Patria has already written about the situation with ventilators, protective and other medical equipment. But also about other adversities. And the SDA leader was nowhere to be found then either. We only hope he won't repeat that worn-out phrase he used during the war - “The SDA led the people in the fight against the coronavirus.”
Individuals from the SDA, yes; the party, no; Bakir Izetbegović, 100% not.
Why Izetbegović slept through what many call the “war against an invisible enemy” is difficult to assess. Was he, by sleeping, opening up additional space for Sebija Izetbegović? Was he afraid of the virus, or perhaps of the capability of the state he has been managing for so long?
Who knows. What the SDA leader must know is that this is the best proof that he is not, nor can he be, the leader of the Bosniaks, no matter how hard he tries to portray himself as such.
Maybe he is tired, maybe aware that he doesn't know, maybe he was afraid. Whatever it is, for the sake of the Bosniaks and all of us in this country, Izetbegović should consider stepping down. The SDA has enough quality staff to lead it into better days, and this country has many more capable people to make us a normal and stable state.
A leader who sleeps while his country is being attacked by a modern plague should urgently hang up his political boots.
