Iraqi officials reported that the death toll from the horrific terrorist attack carried out on Sunday in a busy commercial district of Baghdad has risen to 149, writes AP, reports NAP.
The attack, for which ISIL claimed responsibility, is considered the deadliest terrorist attack in Iraq in the past year, and the largest single bombing attack in the last decade of war. It highlighted ISIL's ability to target the Iraqi capital despite a series of losses on the battlefields in the country, and contributed to public anger towards the political leadership.
A suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden vehicle in the predominantly Shiite district of Baghdad, Karrada, a popular shopping area, especially during Ramadan. The streets were full of young people and families in the time after iftar.
Police and health officials reported that the death toll is currently 149, but it may rise as rescue services have not yet completed their work. At least 192 people were injured, writes AP.
