Azerbaijan launched an 'anti-terrorist operation' in Nagorno-Karabakh

(Patria) - The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced that it has launched an "anti-terrorist operation" in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is under Armenian control, BBC reports.

Tensions surrounding the region, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but inhabited by about 120,000 Armenians, have been escalating for months.

Reportedly, 11 Azerbaijani police officers and civilians were killed in an explosion in another incident.

Air raid sirens are heard in the capital of Karabakh, and witnesses say drone sounds are also audible.

The two neighbors, Azerbaijan and Armenia, have twice gone to war over Nagorno-Karabakh, first in the early 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union and again in 2020.

In the last six-week war in 2020, Azerbaijan regained all territories around Nagorno-Karabakh that Armenia had held since 1994.

Since December, Azerbaijan has imposed a de facto blockade on the only road to the enclave from Armenia, known as the Lachin Corridor.

It accused Armenia of using the road to transport military supplies, which Armenia denies. This move has also caused a major humanitarian crisis.
