Austrian police to confiscate cars on the spot for speeding

(Patria) - Austria is introducing drastic measures for speeding drivers starting next year.

Local police will confiscate vehicles on the spot, and it is also possible that the vehicle will be confiscated permanently.

The Austrian National Council in Vienna adopted the proposal of the Minister of Transport Leonore Gewessler on Wednesday, according to which the new measures will be applied from March 2024.

According to this proposal, if you drive 60 km/h over the speed limit on a road in Austria, or 70 km/h over the speed limit on a highway, the police can, among other things, confiscate your car for two weeks, reports Fenix-Magazin.

"If you repeat the offense, the police can confiscate the vehicle permanently. In that case, the vehicle goes to auction, and 70 percent of the proceeds from the sale go to the road safety fund. The remaining 30 percent goes to local authorities," the Ministry of Transport states about the changes to the law.

If the speeding is more than 80 km/h in a built-up area or 90 km/h outside a built-up area, the vehicle is immediately confiscated and goes to auction, regardless of whether the offense is the first or a repeat. The goal of these measures is to increase road safety.
