Austria was forced to close the A4 highway towards Hungary due to the large number of refugees and a worsening of the situation is expected due to the new Hungarian law, reports the Patria news agency.
According to the stricter law, imprisonment is foreseen for illegal crossing of the state border.
Regarding the A8 highway towards Germany, at the Suben crossing, a 14-kilometer-long traffic jam of cars formed due to border controls.
During yesterday, a total of 19,736 refugees arrived in the Austrian province of Burgenland from Hungary; the largest wave was recorded in the evening, and after midnight, the arrival of refugees decreased.
The new law in Hungary, which came into effect at midnight, provides for a prison sentence for illegal crossing of the state border, B92 reports.
