(Patria) - Iranian citizens holding valid Australian tourist visas will be banned from entering the country for six months, said the Australian Minister of Internal Affairs, citing concerns that some might stay longer than permitted.
Tony Burke said the measure is necessary because there is a risk that Iranians arriving on tourist visas will not be able or willing to leave Australia after their visa expires.
The decision applies only to individuals currently outside Australia who hold a valid tourist visa.
The government has stated that it will consider cases of individuals with Iranian parents.
It was also announced that the government will closely monitor global developments and adjust measures as needed.
