Mayor of Kirchberg in Austria, Franz Hofer, was killed in today's attack, prompting a large-scale police operation.
The attacker is on the run, confirmed for Krone. After the horrific discovery, all police units were dispatched to the scene.
Special units were also alerted, and an armored vehicle Cobra arrived at the crime scene.
After opening fire, the attacker, who was in a field or forest, fled in an unknown direction. The attack occurred around 9:15.
The office of state governor Thomas Stelzer confirmed to Krone at 9:45 that the mayor of Kirchberg an der Donau was killed.
