Ap Lei Chau is the second most densely populated island in the world

(Patria) - With just under 90,000 inhabitants and an area of only 1.3 square kilometers, Ap Lei Chau is the second most densely populated island in the world - right after Santa Cruz del Islote in Colombia.

Ap Lei Chau is a Hong Kong island located in the Aberdeen Channel near the eponymous harbor, so it's not surprising that it once bore the name Aberdeen itself.

It bears its current name due to the shape of its territory, which many liken to a duck's tongue.

To accommodate a large number of people in a small area, the residents of Ap Lei Chau had to build tall skyscrapers.

The most impressive and largest among them are the three Sham Wan skyscrapers (1, 2, and 3), which rise to about 180 meters in height and encompass 52 and 53 floors, respectively.

They are only surpassed by Yuk Kwai Shan hill, whose summit at 196 meters is considered the highest point on the island.

The island has an industrial zone, as well as four main residential areas - Lei Tung Estate, Ap Lei Chau Main Street, South Horizons, and Ap Lei Chau Estate - where most of the inhabitants live.

On the island's main street, you will also find numerous boutiques, furniture stores, and factory outlets.

There are also a few restaurants serving traditional Hong Kong specialties, especially fish dishes.

Although small, Ap Lei Chau also has space for a primary school, several health clinics, a post office, and similar important institutions.

What you cannot find on the duck-tongue-shaped island, you will find on Hong Kong Island, with which it is connected by a bridge.

Transportation is mostly by minibuses and taxis, but also by wooden boats called sampans, writes Punkufer.hr.
