NEW YORK, (Patria) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all UN member states to show restraint and avoid any action that could lead to escalation after Western strikes on Syria, world media report.
- I call on all member states to show restraint in dangerous circumstances and avoid any action that could lead to an escalation of the situation and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people - Guterres said.
After Western attacks on Syria, Guterres postponed his planned trip to Saudi Arabia to monitor the consequences of the military operation by the United States, Great Britain, and France, which primarily targeted chemical military capabilities allegedly possessed by the Syrian authorities.
- Any use of chemical weapons is terrible - added the UN Secretary-General.
He emphasized the importance of acting in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
The Western military intervention in Syria was not authorized by the UN Security Council.
Guterres called on the Security Council members to agree on opening an investigation to determine the identity of the perpetrators of chemical attacks in Syria.
Russian representative Vladimir Dzhabarov said in Moscow that Russia will request an urgent Security Council session on the air strikes by Western forces, RIA Novosti reports.
- The situation is currently being analyzed. Russia will request a UN Security Council session, I am sure - said Dzhabarov, who is the deputy chairman of the foreign policy committee.
