Americans closing notorious Guantanamo

The White House announced that it has completed a plan to close the Guantanamo military prison in Cuba, where the United States often holds detainees suspected of terrorism without prior trial, reports the Patria News Agency.

"The administration has finalized the preparation of a plan aimed at closing Guantanamo prison in a safe and responsible manner and presenting it to Congress," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest at a daily press briefing.

Guantanamo, opened 14 years ago after the September 11 terrorist attacks, still holds 116 detainees.

"It is a priority for President Barack Obama, who promised to close this military prison when he came to the White House in 2009," said Earnest.

However, Republicans in Congress, who hold a majority in both houses, have always fiercely opposed the closure of this prison.

"We have made great progress. From 127 detainees, there are now 116," said the White House spokesman, writes Hina.
