(Patria) - The US vetoed a resolution in the United Nations Security Council on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Thirteen members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, with one abstention and one vote against, BBC reports.
The US, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, was the only country to vote against, meaning the resolution was not adopted by the Security Council.
Arab and Islamic countries today called for a vote on a draft UN Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The proposed resolution is a response to a letter sent by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Security Council on Wednesday, in which he warned of an impending “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza and called on the 15 members of the body to vote for a ceasefire to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and the release of hostages, AP reported.
The draft resolution was submitted by the United Arab Emirates, the Arab representative on the UN Security Council.
