(Patria) - The latest fierce exchange of fire between the US and Iran marks the third major violation of the ceasefire the two sides agreed in April. That temporary truce was reached after nearly six weeks of open military conflict, which began in February when the US and Israel carried out devastating airstrikes on Iran, killing the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Since the ceasefire took effect, it has largely held, while the Trump administration simultaneously enforced a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz to pressure Tehran. Washington's goal is to force Iran into a permanent peace agreement that would reopen this key maritime route, while also addressing the issue of Iran's nuclear program.
However, the strength of this ceasefire has already been seriously undermined twice. The first major incident occurred on May 7, when Iran accused the US of attacking two ships in the strait and striking civilian areas, while Washington claimed it was retaliation for targeting three American destroyers.
Last week, a second violation was recorded when the US military destroyed Iranian missile positions and ships attempting to lay mines. In both previous instances, the US insisted these were strictly limited actions that did not mean a complete end to the ceasefire with Iran.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it targeted an airbase used by US forces to launch attacks on Sirik Island in southern Iran, Iranian media reported.
Sirik Island is located in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. According to IRGC claims, the United States had previously carried out an attack targeting a telecommunications tower on the island.
The Kuwaiti military officially confirmed that its air defense systems are actively intercepting missile attacks and drone strikes.
