US Senator Kelly: Israel used US-made bomb in attack on Hezbollah chief

(Patria) - The bomb with which Israel killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last week was a US-made guided weapon, a US senator said on Sunday, Reuters reported.

Mark Kelly, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee, said Israel used a 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) Mark 84 series bomb during an interview with NBC. His statement represents the first US indication of what weapon was used.

"We are seeing more use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons," Kelly said, using the acronym for "Joint Direct Attack Munition."

"That 2,000-pound bomb that was used, that's a Mark 84 series bomb, to kill Nasrallah," he said.

The Israeli military announced on Saturday that it had eliminated Nasrallah in an attack on the group's central headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The Israeli military declined to comment on what weapon was used in the attack.

JDAMs convert a standard unguided bomb using wings and a GPS guidance system into a guided weapon. The US is a long-standing ally of Israel and its largest arms supplier.
