US House of Representatives to consider pro-Israel bill next week

(Patria) - The US House of Representatives will change its schedule to consider legislation supporting Israel and holding Iran accountable, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said on Saturday, Reuters reported.

"The House stands strong with Israel and there must be consequences for this unprovoked attack," he said in a statement. More details will follow, he said.

His office did not immediately respond to an inquiry about which bill would be considered. It is unclear whether Scalise was referring to a standalone bill for aid to Israel or a $95 billion supplemental spending bill that includes $14 billion for Israel, along with $60 billion for Ukraine, support for Taiwan, and billions in humanitarian aid.

That package passed the Senate with 70% support in February but has been stalled in the House, with Republican leaders unwilling to bring it to a vote, largely due to their objections to further funding for Ukraine.

The package also faces opposition from a handful of progressive Democrats who object to sending more money to Israel as it conducts a military campaign that has killed more than 30,000 civilians in Gaza.

US Senator Mitch McConnell issued a statement on Saturday evening calling on the House to move forward with a larger aid package that includes funding for Ukraine and Taiwan.

"The national security supplemental that has been awaiting action for months will provide critical resources to Israel and our own military forces in the region," the statement said.
