US Vice President Rejects Possibility of Recognizing Palestinian State

(Patria) - US Vice President JD Vance stated yesterday that the United States has no intention of recognizing a Palestinian state.

Vance said this before a meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in London, where both leaders stated that discussion topics would include the global economy, the war between Israel and Hamas, as well as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Responding to reporters' questions before the meeting, Vance also commented on the United Kingdom's decision to recognize a Palestinian state in September if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza.

He said he did not know what such recognition would mean, "given the lack of a functional government there".

When asked if Donald Trump was informed in advance of Israel's intention to capture the city of Gaza, Vance said he did not want to get into such discussions.

"If it were easy to bring peace to that part of the world, it would have happened already," he said.

The United States and the United Kingdom, which have a historically close relationship known as the "special relationship," have disagreements on how the war in Gaza should end.

Vance said both sides want to "solve the problem" of the crisis in Gaza, but that they "may have certain differences of opinion on how exactly to achieve that goal.

"There are many common goals here. I think there are some differences of opinion on how exactly to achieve those common goals, but there you have it - it's a difficult situation," Vance noted.

Currently, more than 140 out of a total of 193 United Nations member states recognize a Palestinian state. Among them are some European Union members - including Spain and Ireland.

Canada, France, and the United Kingdom announced last month that they would recognize a Palestinian state.
