(Patria) - USS Gerald R. Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, sent to the Mediterranean Sea this week in a military mobilization aimed at pressuring Iran, left the Souda Bay naval base on Thursday, AFP reported a photographer.
Its departure occurred as a new round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran on Iran's nuclear program opened in Geneva on Thursday morning, mediated by the Omani Foreign Minister.
The aircraft carrier had been stationed at the US Naval Support Activity Souda Bay base since Monday. The United States Embassy in Athens declined to comment on the aircraft carrier's presence.
President Donald Trump ordered strikes against Iran last year. He has repeatedly threatened Tehran with new military action if it does not reach a new agreement on its controversial nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at building an atomic bomb.
The United States currently has more than ten ships in the Middle East: one aircraft carrier – USS Abraham Lincoln, nine destroyers, and three other warships.
It is rare for two American aircraft carriers to be in the Middle East simultaneously, carrying dozens of fighter jets and manned by thousands of sailors.
