US Elections 2020: Record Turnout Predicted, Almost 4 Million Americans Have Already Voted

(Patria) – Although there is less than a month left until the elections, Americans are voting in large numbers, indicating the possibility of record turnout in the Trump – Biden race.

According to data from the US Elections Project, 3.8 million Americans have already voted, which is significantly more than the 75,000 average for the same period in 2016.

The project administrator, Micheal McDonald from the University of Florida, estimates based on the first round that the turnout could ultimately reach 150 million, representing 65% of voters, and which would be a record since 1908.

According to poll results from 31 states, Biden is currently leading, although polls in states that are usually decisive for the outcome indicate that the battle will be fierce and the outcome unpredictable until the last moment.

Trump has repeatedly expressed opposition to mail-in voting, believing it opens up opportunities for fraud, while relevant experts claim it is a rare occurrence.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll from last week found that about 5% of Democrats nationwide had already voted, compared to 2% of Republicans. Also, about 58% of Democrats plan to vote early compared to 40% of Republicans.

McDonald explains that early voting turnout is typically high, then drops, before a surge just before the election. However, in some states, turnout has already reached unexpectedly high levels, leading to predictions of record overall turnout.
