(Patria) - Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US General Christopher Cavoli believes that the US should maintain its military presence on the European continent, after the Pentagon under President Donald Trump began to consider its global role.
The US Army numbers more than 100,000 soldiers in Europe, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told his European counterparts that they should not assume that the US military presence will last forever.
- My advice is that we keep that force, as it is now - Cavoli told lawmakers during a House Armed Services Committee hearing.
He reminded that the army periodically re-examines the number of soldiers stationed in Europe since 2022, when Washington sent an additional 20,000 soldiers due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Cavoli does not recommend reducing that number.
- Throughout that entire period, I have consistently recommended that we keep those forces, and I will continue to do so if asked - Cavoli added.
