(Patria) - US authorities are conducting an extensive study on the cause of the autism "epidemic", said Health Minister Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Thursday, AFP reported.
"We have launched mass testing and research that will involve hundreds of scientists from around the world," Kennedy said at a televised cabinet meeting chaired by President Donald Trump.
"By September, we will know what caused the autism epidemic. And we will be able to eliminate those exposures," he added.
Kennedy, a vaccine skeptic, said the prevalence of autism has jumped dramatically in recent decades.
"Autism rates have increased since our latest data, we think it will be around one in 31 from one in 10,000 when I was a child," he said, without offering further details or citing a data source.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently estimates the autism rate in children in the United States at one in 36, compared to earlier rates of one in 150.
"That is a terrible statistic and there must be something artificial that is doing this," Trump commented.
