(Patria) - The US Army announced on Saturday that it killed the highest military leader of the Hurras al-Din group, a Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda which announced its dissolution in January, AFP reported.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for US forces in the Middle East, stated in a release that its forces on February 23rd "conducted a precise airstrike in northwestern Syria, targeting and killing Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talaya, a senior military leader of the terrorist organization Huras al-Din".
Since Hurras al-Din announced its dissolution at the end of January, US airstrikes have killed several leaders of the group, CENTCOM states.
On February 22nd, it was stated that "a precise airstrike" killed Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, the leader of the group which the United States has classified as a terrorist organization.
US forces are in Syria as part of the international coalition created in 2014 to fight ISIS extremists.
After Hayat Tahrir al-Sham overthrew President Bashar al-Assad and took power in Damascus on December 8th, Hurras al-Din said it no longer needed to exist.
The group, including foreign extremists, operated in the mountainous northwestern part of Syria.
