(Patria) - Azerbaijan and Armenia could finalise the text of a peace agreement within a few months, said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev while receiving the credentials of Canada's new ambassador to the country, Kevin Hamilton, TASS reported.
"I think we can finalise the text of the peace agreement within a few months, at least its basic principles. I note that during the occupation, the mediators' plan (the OSCE Minsk Group) was to reach an agreement on basic principles, which are called the Madrid Principles, they were to be initialled, and then the text was to be drafted.
We believe that could be an option to agree on the basic principles, to initial them, and then work on the text (of the peace agreement)," Aliyev said.
At the same time, the Azerbaijani leader emphasised that the peace agreement can only be signed if Armenia changes its constitution.
"The main condition (for signing) the peace agreement is a change in Armenia's constitution, because it contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. And until this (change) happens, the peace agreement will not be signed," Aliyev said.
