Park-Forest Hum cleaned and tidied on World Clean Air Day

SARAJevo, (Patria) - On the occasion of the ecological date "World Clean Air Day", the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Development – COOR, with the support of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo, organized a cleaning and tidying action in the Park-Forest Hum.

Students and teachers from five schools in Novo Sarajevo participated in the action: Elementary School "Velešićki heroji", Elementary School "Malta", Elementary School "Pofalići", Secondary School for Environment and Wood Design, and the Electrical Engineering School for Energy, as well as members of the local community councils gravitating to this area. On this occasion, professors from the Secondary School for Environment and Wood Design, in cooperation with KJP Sarajevo-Šume d.o.o., informed the present participants in the project about the planned maintenance and regular silvicultural measures in the Park-Forest Hum area, after which new tree saplings were planted at this location.

The cleaning and tidying action is organized as one of the activities within the project "Strengthening Partnerships – Youth in Action for Environmental Protection and Natural Values" supported by the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo.

Within the mentioned project, implemented by the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Development – COOR with the support of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo, one of the activities was a visit by students from five Novo Sarajevo schools to the Waste Management Center in the Sarajevo Canton area, i.e., the Sarajevo Landfill in Smiljevići. The aim of this activity was to improve the knowledge and raise the awareness of students, teaching staff, and residents about the integrated waste management methods in the Sarajevo Canton, the separation of different types of waste, and collection in containers within the newly built recycling yard and the sanitary landfill in Smiljevići.

During the visit, an educational lecture was held for the present students about the entire waste management system, from waste collection and transportation to the landfill, then entry, weighing, unloading, waste separation in the recycling yard, unloading, installation of probes for landfill gas collection, the system for producing electricity from thermal energy, covering the landfill body, compaction, the system for treating landfill leachate, and other important specifics of the sanitary landfill. After the lecture, a tour of the landfill and the recycling yard was conducted.
