(Patria) - Following this morning's airstrikes and explosions in the capital, Caracas, the Venezuelan government and President Nicolas Maduro issued a dramatic statement in which they directly accused the United States of America, characterizing it as an act of "extremely serious military aggression".
In response to the attacks, President Maduro signed a Decree declaring a state of emergency throughout the country and ordered an immediate transition to "armed struggle".
Civilian and military targets were hit
The official statement states that the targets of the attacks were civilian and military locations in Caracas, and in the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. The authorities in Caracas call this act a "flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter", especially the articles that guarantee the sovereignty of states.
"This aggression threatens international peace and stability, and seriously endangers the lives of millions of people," the statement reads.
According to the Maduro regime, the real goal of the attacks is not democracy, but the plunder of resources. "The goal of this attack is nothing other than to seize Venezuela's strategic resources, especially its oil and minerals, attempting to break the political independence of the nation by force," the government stated.
The most significant part of the response is military mobilization. Maduro ordered the deployment of the Comprehensive Defense Command of the Nation in all states and municipalities.
"The people of Venezuela and its Bolivarian National Armed Forces, in perfect union of the people, army, and police, are deployed to guarantee sovereignty. The entire country must be activated to defeat this imperialist aggression," Maduro stated, referring to Article 51 of the UN Charter, which guarantees the right to self-defense.
In addition to the military response, Venezuela announces a diplomatic battle. "The Bolivarian diplomacy of peace will file appropriate complaints with the United Nations Security Council, seeking condemnation and accountability of the US authorities," it is stated.
The statement concludes with a quote from former leader Hugo Chavez, calling for unity in difficult times: "Faced with any circumstances, the response of every patriot is unity, struggle, battle, and victory."
