(Patria) - The German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) yesterday formed a new parliamentary group, Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN), in the European Parliament with 25 MEPs from eight member states.
The largest party in the new parliamentary group is AfD with 14 MEPs.
The party was recently expelled from the Identity and Democracy group, which has also ceased to exist as most parties from that group joined Patriots for Europe, a new group launched by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
In addition to AfD, ESN also includes the Bulgarian party Revival and the Polish Confederation with three MEPs each, while the French party Reconquête, the Union of Nations and Justice from Lithuania, Republic from Slovakia, Freedom and Direct Democracy from the Czech Republic (SPD), and the Hungarian Our Homeland Movement each have one.
René Aust from AfD and Stanisław Tyszka from the Polish Confederation were elected co-presidents of the group.
The leader of the Czech SPD party, Tomio Okamura, said that the main goals of the new group are to fight the Green Deal, migration, and the Islamization of Europe.
