22 years since the murder of teacher Fatima Gunić and her students Adis, Vedad, and Feđa

A delegation from Sarajevo Canton, relatives, friends, and students of "Fatima Gunić" Elementary School laid flowers today at the memorial on Alipašino polje in memory of the murdered teacher Fatima Gunić and her students Adis Mujal, Vedad Mujkanović, and Feđa Salkić.

Their lives were cut short on this day, 22 years ago, when a shell fired from the aggressor's positions in the direction of Nedžarići hit the improvised premises where teacher Gunić was holding classes for her students. At that time, 23 other students were seriously or lightly wounded.

- I was preparing my younger son for school at home that day, and at the moment the shell fell, it was 10:55 AM. I left my son at home and ran here. I found my Vedad under a desk. My son was copying the poem "Zlatna kantica" at that moment, he had gotten all A's that day and was copying the poem to learn it, but unfortunately, he didn't get to learn it. It's terrible. Living without your child for 22 years. He would be 31 now, a grown man, living in love, starting a family, but unfortunately, everything is denied to him, and what is even sadder is that no one has been held accountable yet. I hope that the hand of justice will reach those who killed innocent children while they were learning - Dženana Tanović, the mother of the murdered Vedad Mujkanović, told reporters with sadness in her voice.

In his address to those present, the Minister of Justice and Administration of Sarajevo Canton, Enver Smajkan, reminded of some facts that speak of the terrible terror of the aggressor's army that held Sarajevo under siege for 1425 days.

- The siege began on April 5, 1992, and during its duration, the city was shelled and fired upon from all available tools and weapons. 11,451 citizens of Sarajevo were killed, including about 1,600 children - stated Minister Smajkan.

He emphasized that he is outraged as a citizen because, apart from command responsibility, there have been no individual indictments for atrocities against the citizens of Sarajevo.

- I hope that there is evidence and that indictments will be filed against individuals who ordered the shelling and mass killings in Sarajevo - added Minister Smajkan.

Tonight at 6:00 PM, an academy will be held at Fatima Gunić Elementary School as part of the Day of Remembrance for the murdered teacher and students.

- During the three-day commemoration, we will organize a memorial volleyball tournament for students of schools in Novi Grad, a football competition for boys, and a history lesson. This year, as in previous years, a public call has been issued for writing literary works and drawing for lower-grade students on the theme 'Heroes with a pen in hand,' because the teacher and students truly died holding a pen in their hands, and that was their only weapon - stated the principal of this elementary school, Hajrudin Ćuprija.

Delegations from the City of Sarajevo, the Municipality of Novi Grad, the Union of War Victims of Sarajevo Canton, and the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo 1992-1995 also laid flowers at the site of the massacre and the deaths of the teacher and her students.
