Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić stated today that Serbia will not change its European integration policy, and that a referendum on the matter in Serbia is possible only when they defeat him in elections, Serbian media report, NAP conveys.
- Although I am sure that the citizens of Serbia would declare themselves similarly to the British, I am also sure that they want a better future, and therefore we remain on the EU path, Vučić said at an extraordinary press conference regarding the outcome of the British referendum.
As he said, the biggest political earthquake since the fall of the Berlin Wall happened this morning.
He noted that "Serbs like to divide themselves on big issues" and that they would probably vote like the British, but pointed out that young people in Britain were mostly in favor of remaining in the European Union.
Vučić said that since this morning there have been those who want to call referendums in Serbia and change policy, but that the people have had their say in the elections.
- When they win the elections, let them call whatever they want, I don't recognize the street. They were from all sides in the elections, the people voted for stability, not for idiots, as happens in other countries, said Vučić.
He added on that occasion:
- Daily emotions will not guide me. We will not change the policy because this is a serious and responsible policy, and this is a government that is disciplined, that implements difficult and responsible measures, that has not had a single phone session, that does not fool the people, and here, look, the pound has fallen, the euro has also fallen, but the dinar will not, because you have a serious and responsible leadership, said Vučić.
As he said, the stupidest thing is to criticize the people.
- You can defeat me in the elections, you can kill me, said Vučić and reiterated that we will have a referendum "in due time", a year before joining the EU.
Asked if he expects a slowdown in the enlargement process, Vučić said he cannot predict, but expects that now a "wave of vows" will begin that they will not, but that everyone will look after their own interests.
- We will not vow to anyone. We will continue on the European path, to reach their values, and the rest are political decisions that do not depend on us, Vučić said.
- Serbia will not get off this train that is going to the EU, it will not get on some "crazy train" that others want to drag it onto, Aleksandar Vučić was categorical.
