Vučić: It is a lie that I will sign Kosovo's independence

(Patria) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić claimed today that it is a lie that he is ready to sign Kosovo's independence.

- I will never sign Kosovo's independence, and shame on everyone in the Serbian political scene who spreads such lies - Vučić said in a video message on his Instagram, adding that he will always adhere to the Serbian Constitution.

Vučić thus reacted to the claims of some opposition parties, reports RSE.

Right-wing parties in Serbia oppose the Ohrid Agreement. They have also repeatedly called for an end to the negotiations on the normalization of relations that Serbia and Kosovo have been conducting under the auspices of the EU since 2011.

The Ohrid Agreement was reached in March in North Macedonia by Vučić and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, with the mediation of the EU.

This is the Annex for the implementation of the European proposal for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, which was agreed upon in Brussels in February.

During her visit to Belgrade on October 31, when she met with Vučić, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement is a "de facto" recognition of Kosovo's independence.

Leyen explained that the Ohrid Agreement provides for various steps, including, for example, the recognition of Kosovo's documents and institutions by Serbia.

She stated that this goes hand in hand with the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities, which Kosovo should realize.

- This will pave the way for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo. This is a necessary prerequisite for the European path - Von der Leyen said.

Vučić said at the time at a joint press conference that the recognition of Kosovo is not an issue for Serbia, but that Serbia is ready to fulfill its obligations from the dialogue.

Full normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is a key prerequisite that the two countries must fulfill in order to become EU members.
