(Patria) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić criticized the protests against violence that the opposition organized today in Belgrade, Novi Sad, and several other cities there.
- Honestly, as president, I asked people not to organize something like this, not because I was scared or threatened, but because I thought it was bad for the country - Vučić said this evening while appearing on Happy television.
He assessed that in this way, "people's emotions are being exploited in the most brutal way".
- I expected them to offer some measures in a veiled form. In the end, all the proposals boiled down to dry politics; they did not care about the future of our children for a single second - Vučić stated.
Thousands of people walked in silence today through the central streets of Belgrade to the building of the Government of Serbia in the protest "Serbia Against Violence".
The protest was called by parliamentary opposition parties, and the reason was the state's reaction after two mass murders that occurred on May 3 and 4.
The gathering was organized without speeches or addresses, and the organizers, among other things, demanded an end to the promotion of violence in the media and public space.
They also demanded the revocation of national frequencies for Pink and Happy television, where Vučić was a guest, and the immediate cancellation of programs that "promote violence, immorality, and aggression", such as reality shows.
A deadline of May 12 was given to the authorities to fulfill the demands, which were read at the beginning and end of the protest.
