(Patria) - Delegations from Belgrade and Pristina will meet today in Brussels to discuss the further implementation of the March agreement from Ohrid. The European Union announced that, after certain doubts, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti have confirmed their attendance.
The meeting comes amid new tensions following local elections in four northern Kosovo municipalities, which were boycotted by Serbs. The Serbian side says it expects nothing, while the Kosovo side hopes the fate of missing persons will be discussed. However, the biggest dispute remains the Community of Serb Municipalities.
“Each side needs to do something to get something,” said EU spokesperson Peter Stano, announcing the meeting.
However, it remains unclear what can be expected from the meeting, especially since both Vučić and Kurti have continued to demonstrate inflexibility to their domestic audiences, reports Deutsche Welle.
During a recent visit to the monument for missing persons in front of the Kosovo Assembly, Prime Minister Kurti said he hopes the meeting on Tuesday will discuss the issue of missing persons. Kosovo and Serbia agreed on a declaration in early April when the delegations last met.
“I expect the issue of missing persons to be urgently addressed on May 2, because here the victims are not only the missing and their families, but our entire nation,” Kurti stated on the National Day of Missing Persons in Kosovo, observed on April 27.
However, Pristina had previously organized elections in four municipalities in northern Kosovo, in which only three percent of citizens voted, and ethnic Albanians were elected mayors.
Such elections, as well as the fact that the international community has in principle accepted them, angered Serbian President Vučić. When asked by journalists what he expected in Brussels in that atmosphere, he briefly said: “I expect nothing from the May 2 meeting.”
As stated in the announcement, the two sides will have the opportunity to discuss other issues of political significance.
The European External Action Service announced that Borrell will address the public after the meeting, which will begin at 6:00 PM.
