Driver from BiH kills two Croatian Motorways workers with truck

(Patria) - Two workers of Croatian Motorways died this morning in a traffic accident on the Rijeka-Zagreb highway towards the capital between Ravna Gora and Vrbovsko. A truck hit them and the patrol vehicle that was on the emergency lane and properly marked. As reported by HRT, the truck that hit the HAC workers was driven by a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, aged 64.

He was detained at the Rijeka Clinical Hospital Center for treatment, but it is not yet known what injuries are involved. However, according to some unconfirmed information, he was subsequently released and taken to the police station, writes Index.hr.

The practice is that after the completion of investigative actions, the suspect is brought to the competent state attorney's office, which then decides on pre-trial detention. Given that he is a foreign national, he will likely be ordered into pre-trial detention for a period of one month after being released from the hospital due to the risk of flight.

The truck driver's breathalyzer test reportedly showed 0.0 per mille.

Index reported that the truck that caused the serious accident is owned by a company from Sisak and that one worker narrowly avoided being hit by the truck and was uninjured in the accident. However, the truck hit two workers and they died at the scene.

Both workers were, it could be said, in the first half of their lives. One was born in 1992, and the other in 1979. They lived in nearby towns in Gorski Kotar. In the truck's impact, the patrol vehicle ended up on its side on the grassy area next to the highway.

Traffic on the section between the Ravna Gora and Vrbovsko junctions was completely interrupted until 12:00. It was normalized only in the later afternoon hours.

“The investigation is completed, a criminal investigation follows. Since the investigations are confidential, I cannot give you other data. I cannot tell you what happened to the driver, however, after the completed criminal investigation, I assume that a criminal complaint will follow from the police administration to the State Attorney's Office, and then an investigation by the State Attorney's Office,” Sonja Jazbec, deputy municipal state attorney in Rijeka, told HRT.

The police have not yet commented on the cause and details of the accident. After the investigation, an analysis of the tachograph, as well as HAC surveillance cameras, remains.
