Macedonian Government Adopts Bill on Changing the Country's Name

SKOPJE, (Patria) - The Macedonian government has adopted a bill on the ratification of the Agreement on changing the country's name, based on the agreement signed on Sunday by officials of Macedonia and Greece.

The two sides have determined by the Agreement that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will henceforth be called the Republic of North Macedonia.

The adopted bill will be submitted to Parliament for adoption, which requires a simple majority.

VMRO-DPMNE, the largest opposition party in Macedonia, opposes the agreement and announces that they will prevent the realization of the agreement.

After the Parliament of Macedonia adopts the Law, it will be submitted to President Gjorge Ivanov for signing. However, Ivanov has already announced that he will not sign, because he considers the Agreement to be harmful and unconstitutional.

If Ivanov refuses to sign, the law will be returned to Parliament for a second vote, and then it will be necessary for it to be adopted by an absolute majority, after which Ivanov will be obliged by the Constitution to sign.
