Renowned Croatian writer Daša Drndić has died

RIJEKA, (Patria) - After a serious illness, the award-winning Croatian writer Daša Drndić died last night in a hospice in Rijeka.

Daša Drndić was born in Zagreb on August 10, 1946. From 1953, she lived in Belgrade, where she studied English language and literature, and earned a master's degree in dramaturgy at Southern Illinois University in the US as a Fulbright scholar.

She worked as a literary translator, an English teacher, a dramaturge, and an editor of television drama programs. She is the author of a number of radio dramas.

In the early nineties, she moved from Belgrade to Rijeka, where she earned her doctorate at the Faculty of Philosophy and taught British literature and creative writing at the Department of English Studies until her retirement.

Her last public appearance was just over a month ago at the Ex libris antiquarian bookstore, where a reissue of her first book published in Croatia in 1997 – "Umiranje u Torontu" – was presented.
