First case of West Nile fever registered in Serbia

The first patient in Serbia with West Nile fever was registered over the weekend, while two patients with indications of infection are undergoing testing, stated the director of the "Batut" Institute, Dragan Ilić, reports the Patria News Agency.

He emphasized that it will be determined during the day whether it is the fever or not, Belgrade media report.

According to him, data from mosquito surveillance indicate new locations where the virus has been identified in mosquitoes.

"This indicates that we have the presence of the West Nile fever virus in a wider territory of Serbia, which definitely means that it is necessary to intensively treat mosquitoes and take measures to protect ourselves from mosquito bites," said Ilić.
