Belgrade Court Rules: Tito's Heirs Will Receive Nothing from His Estate

Heirs of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito will receive nothing from the property they sought, according to a decision by the First Basic Court in Belgrade, writes Večernje novosti. The court dismissed all claims of the heirs as unfounded, reports the Patria news agency.

In its reasoning, the court reminds that the inheritance procedure for the division of Tito's property was legally concluded before the Fourth Municipal Court in Belgrade back in 1991. At that time, 800 pieces of clothing, shoes, and Tito's personal belongings were divided. Dissatisfied, his wife Jovanka filed a request for a supplementary inheritance decision in March 2002.

Judge Ljubica Nenadić stated that the property sought by the heirs in the supplementary procedure, which ceased to be socially owned, cannot be considered subsequently found estate, and therefore the legal conditions for issuing a supplementary inheritance decision have not been met.

During the inheritance procedure, the now deceased Jovanka Broz proposed that the property which was later covered by the Law on Management of Property in Social Ownership related to Tito's life and work should also be discussed, the court explained.

It is also added that Tito's sons, Žarko and Aleksandar Miša Broz, opposed Jovanka's proposal, with the late Žarko stating that her request was directed towards the state.

This disputed the claims of the late Jovanka Broz that the property she proposed to be discussed was the testator's property - stated judge Nenadić. The heirs will file an appeal.
