Stano: There will be consequences if the Serbia-Kosovo agreement is not implemented

(Patria) - EU officials have stated that Serbia and Kosovo are obliged to implement all articles of the agreement reached by the leaders of the two countries.

EU spokesperson Peter Stano said that possible refusal to implement everything that was agreed could have negative consequences.

- Of course, there will be consequences. There will be political consequences, consequences for reputation, but also financial ones. And that is also stated in the agreement that both sides agreed to - Stano said.

His comments come after Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated in an interview with Radio Television of Serbia that Serbia will implement some parts of the European proposal for normalizing relations between Belgrade and Priština, but not others.

Vučić confirmed that he also conveyed these views to European leaders. Vučić and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti agreed on the text of the agreement on the path to normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia on February 27 in Brussels.

At a meeting held on March 18 in Ohrid, they also agreed on an annex for the implementation of all articles of the agreement.

The leaders did not sign the agreement, and international actors claim that both sides are obliged to implement all articles of the agreement.

Serbian officials, however, regularly state that they will not implement all articles of the agreement, especially those related to Kosovo's membership in international organizations.

Stano did not want to comment on Vučić's statements but said that EU member states, as well as other international partners, will monitor the implementation process of the agreement and reiterated that there will be consequences in case of backsliding in implementation.

- If you make a political commitment, you are expected to fulfill it, to deliver, and not to jeopardize your credibility and your country's accession path. In the case of Serbia, the country has entered into a contractual agreement, essentially through amendments to Chapter 35, which it will deliver. If not, then it will have a very negative impact on Serbia's overall accession process - Stano said, as reported by RSE.
