Serbia does not intend to abolish the law on universal jurisdiction for war crimes in SFRY and will continue to apply it, Milan Petrović, head of the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office of Serbia, told Radio Free Europe, reports the Patria News Agency.
This law was precisely one of the reasons why Croatia blocked Serbia's accession negotiations with the European Union. Croatia recently agreed to unblock Serbia's negotiations with the EU, but Belgrade does not intend to abolish this law.
Petrović says that announcements from Croatia that it will block Serbia's European integration if it applies this law do not affect the work of the Serbian prosecution and adds that there are ongoing war crimes cases in which Croatian citizens are suspected.
"Serbia is not considering abolishing the Law on the Organization of Competencies of State Bodies in War Crimes Proceedings. The War Crimes Prosecutor's Office continues to apply this law in full measure and scope. Its repeal would lead to us being unable to prosecute war criminals and they could practically live in peace and avoid criminal responsibility," says Petrović.
When asked by journalists how many Croatian citizens the Prosecutor's Office is currently interested in due to suspicion of committing war crimes, Petrović replied that they do not have that information in official records.
He also added that there are cases that the Prosecutor's Office is currently working on, related to war crimes on the territory of the Republic of Croatia, and for which there is suspicion that they were committed by Croatian citizens, including Croatian defenders.
"Given that the pre-investigative and investigation phases are secret, I cannot answer this question now. But, there are cases we are currently working on regarding war crimes on the territory of the Republic of Croatia, cases in which we suspect that they were committed by Croatian citizens, including Croatian defenders," said Petrović, writes Index.
