'Amnesia' being filmed, a series about migrant smuggling in Croatia

(Patria) -  Production company Drugi plan d.o.o., in cooperation with German distribution company Beta Film, is preparing a six-part drama series titled Amnesia, about migrant and drug smuggling on the border of southeastern Europe. The series will begin filming in March 2020 at the Plitvice Lakes, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre announced.

The series is directed by Goran Gajić, with leading roles played by Branka Katić, Tihana Lazović and Aleksandar Cvjetković.

The screenplay is written by journalist and writer Ivica Đikić and journalist and writer Emir Imamović Pirke.

Filming of Amnesia is scheduled for March 2020 in the Plitvice Lakes National Park, through which indeed passes the route used by many refugees fleeing Syria and other war-torn countries.

The story begins with the 17-year-old son of a former mayor who wakes up from a coma after being brutally beaten and realises he cannot remember who attacked him. This triggers the uncovering of a series of dark secrets in a small Croatian border town, where local authorities profit from smuggling drugs and refugees from southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa into Austria and Germany.

'At the centre of the story is a community still terrified by the recent war and the forced emigration of the population it caused. Human and drug smuggling is the main source of income, mostly for a select few. With a bleak and claustrophobic future, the only way to survive is – to forget. Everything. Amnesia,' explains director Gajić.

Beta Film CEO Moritz von Kruedener adds: 'The collaboration on Amnesia is yet another example of expanding business cooperation with partners from Eastern Europe. Over the past years, we have built an impressive portfolio by joining forces with HBO Europe on the multi-award-winning miniseries Burning Bush directed by Agnieszka Holland, as well as on the series The Desert, with Robert Dornhelm on the film Maria Theresa and with Dariusz Jablonski on the series The Pleasure Principle, the first Polish-Czech-Ukrainian co-production.'

Drugi plan d.o.o. also produced the series The Paper, which is now available on the streaming service Netflix, and the first series from original HBO Europe production in our region, Success.
