(Patria) - Slovenia does not support funding of fences on the EU's external borders from European funds, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob said today upon arrival in Brussels, at a meeting of EU leaders where migration will also be discussed.
- I will be very explicit, the Slovenian experience shows that a fence does not solve the problem. I will defend that position today and we will not support either funds for erecting fences or this policy - Golob said about the possibility of funding the construction of fences on the EU's external borders.
Recently, calls have been renewed within the EU for funding fences on external borders from EU funds, which was recently advocated by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, the STA agency reports. The European Commission, however, is not inclined to this.
EU leaders today also have on their agenda a discussion on strengthening the global competitiveness of the European economy, which, according to the Slovenian prime minister, will be brief.
They will discuss this in more detail at the regular session in March, by which time Brussels should present concrete proposals within the framework of the so-called green plan for European industry.
- Slovenia believes that we must react as a unified European Union - Golob emphasized.
In his opinion, it is necessary to respond in a way that the response does not contradict the measures of the USA, but on the other hand takes into account the specificities of the internal European market.
- Our key position is that we would not seek additional funds, but through flexibility in spending funds from the recovery and resilience program, we could redirect part of those funds to green development measures - Golob concluded, Hina reports.
