Meeting in Slovenia: Trgovska Gora is not a place for nuclear waste

(Patria) - MPs in the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and members of the Green Club Saša Magazinović and Jasmin Emrić met in Ljubljana with the President of the Committee on Health of the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Franc Trček.

On that occasion, the members of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Parliament informed their interlocutor about the activities of the Green Club regarding the opposition to the establishment and construction of a radioactive and nuclear waste repository at the Trgovska Gora site, which is located in the Republic of Croatia on the very border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. MPs Magazinović and Emrić particularly emphasized, given the geographical location of the planned site, that it will have the greatest negative impact on the population and natural resources in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a view shared in the same way by the expert and academic community, local communities, and non-governmental organizations on both sides of the border.

Trček was also informed that all competent institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina have expressed opposition to this plan and the intention of the Republic of Croatia to store hazardous waste on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, that official documents reflecting the identical stance of parliaments at all levels towards this problem have been unanimously adopted, as well as conclusions of the Presidency of BiH requesting the competent institutions of the Republic of Croatia to exclude the proposed Trgovska Gora site as a location for the storage and disposal of radioactive and nuclear waste.

Given that Croatia and Slovenia have a contractual relationship for the storage of radioactive and nuclear waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, the President of the Committee on Health of the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia expressed understanding regarding the presented problem, and agreed with the opinion of the expert public that the established practice of storing and disposing of this type of hazardous waste at the place of origin should be respected.

In light of further cooperation and understanding, it was agreed that the Committee on Health and the Committee on Infrastructure, Energy, and Environmental Protection of the National Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia will be thoroughly informed by the Green Club about the adopted conclusions of the international conference recently held in Sarajevo on this topic, as well as other relevant documentation, in order to continue official communication and monitoring of this issue.
