Coordination Body Meeting on Trgovska Gora: Initiate Meeting with Slovenia Regarding Waste Disposal from Krško NPP

(Patria) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Staša Košarac organized a meeting of the Coordination Body with members of the Expert and Legal Teams for Trgovska Gora in Sarajevo today.

Minister Košarac informed the participants of today's meeting that the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH has officially notified the Croatian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of BiH's intention to participate in the environmental impact assessment procedure for the disposal of radioactive waste at Trgovska Gora.

He added that within the defined deadline, requests, remarks, and key questions to be considered in the environmental impact study for the disposal of radioactive waste at this location will be submitted to the Croatian side.

"Our commitment, right, and obligation is to participate in the entire process. In accordance with procedures and international conventions, we will submit requests and remarks to the Croatian side through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH, i.e., the diplomatic-consular network, and the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology of Republika Srpska, which is the contact point for the Espoo Convention," said Minister Košarac.

He emphasized that the competent institutions at all levels of government in BiH are fully motivated and are carrying out activities in accordance with the defined work plan of the Expert Team.

Members of the Coordination Body accepted the Action Plan of Republika Srpska with a projection of budgetary funds necessary for research in Republika Srpska, i.e., in the municipalities gravitating towards the Una River basin and the Trgovska Gora area. It was emphasized that the Federation of BiH will prepare its action plan by the end of this month.

"The action plans of Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH are the basis for our experts to begin field research based on the agenda determined by the Expert Team," said Minister Košarac.

It was concluded at today's meeting that a supplement to the decision on appointing members of the Coordination Body will be requested from the Council of Ministers of BiH, in a way that a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH is also appointed to this working body.

Members of the Coordination Body accepted the initiative of Minister Košarac to send a request through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH for an official meeting with the competent institutions of Slovenia to discuss the issue of building a disposal site at Trgovska Gora.

Minister Košarac informed the members of the Coordination Body, the Legal and Expert Teams about the talks he had with the Prime Minister of Slovenia Robert Golob during his recent visit to BiH.

"I was encouraged by the fact that Prime Minister Golob expressed understanding for this issue, and that he expressed readiness to openly discuss Trgovska Gora in the coming period. Our goal is to open a discussion in Slovenia with representatives of the institutions there and to obtain comprehensive information about this country's relationship with Croatia regarding the disposal of waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant," stated Minister Košarac.

He announced that next week he will also discuss the issue in question with the Ambassador of Slovenia to BiH.
